Looking for information on Richardson of Edinburgh
from Richard R: bushbreed (ricr) photos on Thu 04/02/10 06:08

I am a Scots/French/Cree Metis man, living in the Metis community of Green Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada and am interested in learning about my own Scottish heritage. Many "half-breeds" were descended from Scottish people and helped to settle the west, in Canada. My Great Grandfather was named Hugh Richardson, whose father came from Edinburgh (we think) and, although he never stayed around to raise his son, my Great Grandmother "stole" his name and gave it to my Grandfather when he was born. We have never known of any relatives, named Richardson and have not been acknowledged by that family, but I am curious about them. Any assistance with learning more about this part of my heritage would be greatly appreciated. Richard Richardson

http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/genealogy/022-913.003-e.html might be a good starting place if you don't lnow his first name, Richard. Do you know your grandfather's birth date? If you do, you might also check at the Vital Statistics office for Saskatchewan for his birth registration. His father's name may be on it... You might need to go through a federal source though, if your g-grandmother was First Nations. I'm not sure how that works. The baby of such a liason might not have status as First Nations at that time. Good luck!

Hi again; I do know my Grandfather's birth date, but his father was not listed on the Baptism Certificate, which I have. He was probably not registered with Indian affairs, but many of his relatives were. In those days, it was common for non native people to have a "country wife" and this is how my Grandfather came to be. I know that I will be able to learn more about the Richardson side of the family and look forward to the search. Thank you for your suggestions as to where to look, they are helpful.
